New Delhi, August 29, 2025 — Foxconn, the Taiwanese tech giant, has partnered with Japan’s SoftBank to build a manufacturing facility in Ohio for AI-driven data center hardware. Foxconn Chairman Young Liu confirmed the deal on Monday and revealed that SoftBank acquired Foxconn’s former electric vehicle plant in Lordstown, Ohio. Instead of abandoning the site, both companies will operate it jointly through a new venture, focusing on AI infrastructure production.
This project forms part of the broader Stargate initiative, a multi-billion-dollar effort to expand AI infrastructure in the U.S. President Donald Trump launched Stargate earlier this year. The initiative includes major tech names like SoftBank, OpenAI, and Oracle, and aims to create a nationwide AI framework with a potential investment of up to $500 billion.
Foxconn previously sold the Lordstown facility and its machinery for $375 million, with SoftBank as the buyer. The plant will now shift from electric vehicle production to AI hardware.
Liu emphasized that both companies began planning for this venture more than six months ago. "Success depends on three factors: access to power, location, and timely execution. Ohio is the best choice, and SoftBank agrees," Liu stated.
Though SoftBank has not publicly commented on the acquisition, both companies have already started work at the Lordstown site, signaling their readiness to meet AI demand. The facility will now produce the components needed for AI infrastructure, reflecting the industry's rapid shift toward AI and cloud computing.
Foxconn, known for assembling Apple devices, is positioning itself as a leader in the growing AI space. With the rising demand for AI servers and data centers, Foxconn is tapping into this market to secure its future role in technology.
The Stargate initiative is expected to boost Ohio’s economy by creating thousands of jobs and attracting investment. Local leaders view it as a major economic advantage for the state.
The partnership highlights the importance of international collaborations in advancing tech infrastructure. With OpenAI and Oracle also involved, the project will shape the future of AI.
As the Lordstown facility ramps up, production will support U.S. AI infrastructure. While no specific timeline has been set, Liu stressed the urgency, saying, "We need to move fast to meet demand."
The project also supports the U.S. goal of reducing dependence on foreign tech, with the Lordstown plant playing a critical role in strengthening domestic AI capabilities. If successful, this partnership could serve as a model for future U.S. infrastructure projects.
