The Alliance to End Plastic Waste ("Alliance") today announced a new partnership with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to address the worldwide pollution of the oceans from plastic waste - By implementing local solutions in rapidly urbanizing cities in Asia, the agreement will bring together the over 40 leading global member companies of the Alliance and the strengths of USAID's new flagship program "Clean Cities, Blue Ocean" against plastic pollution of the oceans.

"The work we will do with USAID reaffirms the Alliance's commitment to partnering to develop, incubate and deploy projects in local cities and communities that support the goal of preventing plastic waste in the environment," said Jacob Duer , President and CEO of the Alliance to End Plastic Waste, "Partnerships like this enable us to demonstrate and accelerate the implementation of solutions that then drive capital investments - which are necessary to address the problem of plastic waste."

Local solutions are imperative to contain the flood of more than eight million tons of plastic that enter the sea every year. Through the USAID program "Clean Cities, Blue Ocean", the Alliance will work to find and implement local solutions to reduce and prevent the penetration of plastic waste from land into the waterways and the sea - with a focus on urbanization Cities in Asia.

The partnership will work for:

  • bringing together technical expertise, global investments and locally managed solutions - with the aim of creating markets and incentives for recycling and reuse markets;
  • Help identify and help deploy innovative and regionally appropriate technologies, infrastructures and business models that can mitigate and mitigate the waste management and recycling crises that many cities and communities face;
  • Reach and educate individuals, local businesses and multinational companies for more sustainable practices and encourage behavioral change in them; and
  • support the development and implementation of effective principles and regulations.

The partnership will also seek to identify ways to improve livelihoods, health and safety for formal and informal workers and other underrepresented members of the community who are at the heart of urban waste management and hygiene.
