Latest Salvo in the Nissan-Ghosn battle is Japanese Automaker seeking $91 million

Nissan Motor Co. is hastening its pursuit of claims against the former Chairman Carlos Ghosn, suing him for $91 million (10 billion yen) in return of the damages created by him to the Japanese automaker and alliance of Nissan Renault SA.

The 10 billion yen that the automaker is seeking is on the basis of the payments made to or else by Ghosn, that includes making use of the overseas residential property deprived of paying any rent, making payments to his sister & personal lawyer in Lebanon, private usage of corporate jets along with the overall costs company had to bear while this entire process of investigation.

Ghosn got arrested in November 2018 over the charges of financial misconduct, also had faced trial in Japan until he made a dramatic escape to his homeland Lebanon at the end of December 2019. Besides, Nissan along with the Japanese prosecutors have claimed the former leader for under-reporting his income as well as using the company’s money for his personal gain. However, Ghosn has denied to all these charges.

If the compensations that Nissan is seeking gets successfully reclaimed, possibly will represent a substantial portion of Ghosn’s entire net worth. Nissan’s ex-leader’s fortune ha been calculated to be around $70 million, which has probably fallen down from approx. $120 million a year ago, as per the sources.

Ghosn’s spokesperson said that his lawyers haven’t yet reviewed the complaint that appears to be a part of Nissan’s “choreography.”

Nissan is not the only party determined on going after Ghosn, Japan’s justice minister, Masako Mori, had recently said that she would do whatever it takes to bring back Ghosn to trial, although the country has not yet made any progression towards this.

On the other hand, Ghosn is pursuing his claims against Nissan, stating his false dismiss from the Dutch unit of the carmaker as well as by a joint venture known as Nissan-Mitsubishi BV. Also, he is suing around $16.4 million (15 million euros) in lost income.

The 65-year-old, ex-chairman who had been facing two trials over the charges of financial wrongdoing in Japan, hopped bail & flew from the country last year with the support of a security detail directed by an ex-Green Beret. Ghosn has since then been accusing Nissan’s executives of conspiracy with prosecutors in Japan to unjustly arrest him.
