Mobile World Congress's 2020 Event Called off First time in 33 years

Mobile World Congress (MWC) is one of the biggest annual event for the wireless industry. This event is evident of launch of a number of smartphones, smartwatches and tablets. MWC 2020 was expecting various announcement supporting the hottest trend of 5G network.

GSM Association in a press release said it has decided to cancel their 2020 edition of the sector’s biggest event owing to the rising health safety concerns around novel coronavirus outbreak. GSMA has been organizing the event annually ever since 2006 in Barcelona, Spain, where industry leaders, policymakers, regulatory bodies as well as operators across the broader ecosystem confer the developments in telecom technology sector. However, it is the first time in 33-years history of MWC Barcelona when the organizers have called off the event.

This decision was taken by the global telecom body after some of the major sponsors as well as leading exhibitors including those companies that were also on the board of GSMA pulled out of the show because of the rising novel coronavirus fears. A few major names include Cisco, Vodafone, Amazon, Vivo, Intel, NTT, LG, Facebook, Docomo, SonyMediatek, Nvidia etc.

Every year, these telecom giants were using the MWC platform & the oceans of publicity that enabled them in creating marketing buzz around their hottest wares. This year fifth-generation (5G) mobile services was supposed to be the biggest focus and now after the cancellation of the event quite a few companies will have to reschedule their launch events. Moreover, chipmaking giant Intel probably had planned announcement of their 5G networks products and will now hold the unveiling for another time, as per the sources.

Also, Motorola and others were preparing to showcase their new 5G smartphones, which is bad news for the smartphone industry. As, the smartphone industry is trying to stimulate the stalled growth with the assurance of higher data speeds & faster responsiveness after experiencing the decline in smartphone shipments since 2016.

The cancellation of the major annual MWC event will not only affect the participants but also the organizers. Since, industry giants’ often spend tens of millions of dollars for exhibiting at the show. For instance, Ericsson’s pulling off from the event alone left a huge gap that is supposingly bigger than a regular American football ground inside in a conference hall.
